AFP-meet - 10 year Manciversary

All welcome - Saturday 10th October

We are doing a re-play of the AFP-meet 10 years ago where several of us met, for the first time, at an excellent Manchester AFPmeet: Mary, Darren, Stuart, Kevin, Dave (who was then called Alex), Martyn, Homicide and a host of other AFPers were there, but for several of the above (including me) it was their first ever AFPmeet.

All past and current AFPers, and people connected to AFPers, are welcome.

From 3pm in the pub we first met at, the Oxford, on Oxford Road near Whitworth Park, Manchester.
Then moving on to the Shere Khan curry house at about 8pmish, just like we did 10 years ago.  Not sure we'll go back to Darren's and make Dave put on a French maid's outfit this time though.

Please point people at this post, and feel free to re-post on alt.fan.pratchett announce someone.  I would love for as many AFPers to be there as possible, faces old and new.

Contact details on the day (if you are lost/confused/bored) are mine: 07751 696 055.

Charity auction of interest
Over at accessiblehouse, a community organized by friends of mine to help raise money to forestall the foreclosure on my home, a friend is offering an item for auction that I think may be of interest to this community. My apologies if it is not.

The item is: PTerry: Once More* with Footnotes. Which is to say a signed, out-of-print, first printing NESFA Press collection of the writings of Sir (then Mr.) Terry Pratchett. Very rare, collectible item. High bid is currently $300. Item is listed for sale at upwards of $500 for the second printing. Auction ends noon, Central time, April 14, 2009.

See the profile at accessiblehouse for information on why this auction is taking place, the means and methods of its operation and contact information for any questions. I now return you to your regularly scheduled community programming.

IDWCon 2009 -- cheap flights
Those of you pondering going to the Irish Discworld Con in November:

RyanAir is doing a cheap flight sale, and some of those flights go into Shannon, which is much closer to the Con site than Dublin is.

Anyone still trying to decide about going to Eastercon?
x-posted to my own journal.

I've got crash space: for about three in reasonable comfort, up to quite a few if you don't mind floor...
(I'm not, like, right next door to the venue or anything, but there's a shuttle bus from the venue- leaving until decently late in the evening- to the train station, from whence it's a very short journey out my way, and saving £66 a night seems worth it to me.)
[NB: if all my dedicated readers leap for this tempting offer, preference will be given to those who I've met in person or I know their mum or have other means of being fairly sure they won't hit me with a big axe and nick all my books.]

Anybody who's already going, could a minimeet happen at some point?

Cardiff Winterbay instameet, 21st Jan, 1730
winterbay is in town for a meeting next week and has asked me to put something together.

So, the Plan:

1. Assemble at 1730 at The Prince of Wales, a Wetherspoons just outside Cardiff Central Station (trains & buses). That's located here.

2. When Winterbay arrives from their meeting & getting into the hotel, stay just a little bit longer and then take the bus to Milgi Lounge, which is here. Those of you arriving a bit later, we will plan to be at Milgi's yurt which is out the back of the main café. Milgi has free wi-fi so feel free to bring devices.

Questions, I can be contacted at +44(0)7947214169.

MaryFest '09: Sat 29 - Mon 31 Aug 2009

Evening all!

Just wanted to give you a date for your diaries, which several of you already know, but I am announcing it here in plenty of time, to cover all bases ;-)   Party/camping/chilled-out friendly gathering - From Sat 29th Aug - Mon 31st Aug 2009

As many of you will be aware, every August Bank Holiday weekend I hold a gathering at my house, open to everyone I know, and largely populated by afpers and hashafpers.  What started as a small affair (the excuse being my birthday) has grown into a yearly party and camping event, with live music provided on the Saturday evening by anyone that feels like entertaning us (so bring something to hit, strum, or blow, if you wish).

As usual, campers will be welcome from around Saturday lunchtime (though you can arrive earlier by prior arrangement), with the party-proper kicking off from around 3pm on Saturday, and I will be providing a free buffet large enough to feed the 5000 from about 5pm, and unlimited toast/cereal for breakfast on the Sunday.  Other than that you are on your own foodwise, though of course you can use my microwave and toaster, but feel free to bring camping stoves etc.  On the Sunday some of us usually invade the local pub next door for lunch.

Anyone who knows me from AFPdom is welcome.  Even those that don't know me are welcome too, provided they know someone who is coming and is willing to vouch for them (to confirm you're not a psychopath or anything!)  And I do ask people to try to let me know they are coming, so that I can be sure I get enough food in.  But, as I say,  I will ask nearer the time.

Meet MOLE meet!

The lovely Mole is coming to Manchester for a couple of days - this is an opportunity to welcome him, and to dispense hugs/chocolate...

Due to a comms error between myself and Mole the full details of this meet are coming out a little late, ooooops, but better late than never ;-)

Time and Place
30 December 2008
18:30 - 23:30
Slug and Lettuce
Stamford New Road
Altrincham, United Kingdom
 07751 696 055 (Mary)

Mole is visiting Manchester and would like to see everyone, cos all the cool kids are up here. ;-)

Meet for drinks, and the usual, at the Slug and Lettuce just up the road from Altrincham tram/train station.

The location is child-friendly up until 8pm, and serves food, and has comfy chairs. Feel free to bring chocolate.

A map of the location, and all sorts of other info, is available here:

If you are able to let me know if you are coming, so we have a rough idea of numbers, that would be useful, via comment here, text, or via facebook:

Winter ManMeet 2008 - Ho ho, f***ing ho. TODAY
No, not a collection of men. A Manchester Meet.

Deansgate Locks, Whitworth Street West, Manchester, Lancashire, M1 5LH
0161 839 7558
Link Google Maps

Easy peasy by public transport. Get a train to Deansgate, stumble out of the front of the train station. Look across the road. Job done.

TODAY 4pm onwards until whenever we stumble out (far too much stumbling going on).

Shinies, not so shinies, games, etc. Money for beer. Money to buy me beer. The usual.

There is free wifi, but it's usually rather pants. If you want net, I'd recommend bringing a stick.

Kian's Mobile: +44 (0) 798 333 43 24 (don't worry about security of this number, it's already plastered all over the internet).

Manchester Winter Meet
So it is that time of year again. Its wet and cold and generally icky - so my remedy, a meet. Many shiny people and shiny things and flashing (as MP just told me).

I propose that we meet at Revolution, Deansgate (under the tram stop with train station across the road) on the 6th of December. Unless someone suggests a better place.

The bar are a nice host (we have GeekUp Manchester meets there once a month and I'm currently writing this over their own wireless!). Vodka based drinks, (by all accounts) nice food at reasonable prices.

The Scince and Industry Museum is almost back to back with it too so could go there for morning/afternoon entertainment.

Crash space can be offered by myself/Kian for a few people and I'm looking to Tessa/MP/Nikkichu/Mary/etc for any further needed.

So who's up for it?

Match it for Pratchett: Sponsored British London 10K Run
I can't remember if I posted the original request for sponsorship here or not, but in case you didn't know I'll be running British London 10K in July for the Altzheimer's Society in the UK. I hope this brief update won't offend/annoy anyone.

People have been very generous, and so far the run has raised £110 through the Justgiving website with an additional £50 in direct pledges. This brings the total to date up to £160 - that's US$313 or AU$328 (inexplicably the currency converter doesn't seem to do Ankh Morpork Dollars). I have a target of £500, and I'm hopeful that the run will be able to raise something close to this by the time of the event in July.

Training progressCollapse )

Thank you all for your support.

P.S. Anyone fancy a meet after the race?

Cambndge insta-meet
Since prior to moving into my new house in South Wales , I shall be visiting friends in East Anglia based in Cambridge from tomorrow night for a few days. I thought I'd have a go at calling an insta-meet for Saturday night (Feb 16).

I'm not familiar with which venue is currently favourite for Cambridge meets but I shall aim to be in the Alma pub between
6:30 and 7:00 should anyone want to turn up. After that we could move on to somewhere more central (I shall be staying north of the Cam) of for food if people want.

Sorry about the short notice but house hunting is traditionally hectic.

Internet access from tomorrow may be limited but hopefully I'll get to check my e-mail via an internet cafe whilst visiting the city so e-mail response should reach me before then. Otherwise feel free to text or ring my mobile

Altrincham Food Meet : October 7
I've been looking around for opportunities to mark my half century and, more importantly the big 50th anniversary in October, and am pleasantly surprised to find my local community have come up with something

On Sunday October 7, the historic Altrincham market is staging a Food festival. Admission is free to watch the dancing and listen to the music but you need to buy tokens (minimum £5) to sample the various offerings.

The event begins at 11am and I'm sure if folks were to turn up, we could retire to one of the many local hostelries for refreshment after.

MaryFest 2007 - This Sunday 26th Aug.

This Sunday it is my birthday and I am having a birthday gathering to celebrate.  I have previously mentioned the date and that there would be a *thing*, but I thought I should really post a few more details, and also ask people to comment by way of an RSVP so that I have an idea of numbers / dietary requirements for catering.

The Plan:

Everyone welcome from 3 - 3.30pm onwards, with buffet food around 5pmish.
Stuart has put together a band to provide some live music around 7ish.
There will also be impromptu musical entertainment provided by anyone who feels like playing anything, singing, whatever...
People are welcome to stay overnight, and for those that do so there will be the option of joining us for a pub lunch at 12.30pm on Monday at The Romper (my rather lovely local).

Please bring:

A bottle of your favourite drink to share, if you would like to (but if you can't afford to then please don't bring one! - Wouldn't want a lack of bottle-type-offering to stop you from coming. I will be making sure there is plenty of alcohol available anyway).

A musical instrument if you have one and would like to play it. No pressure though. People are welcome to entertain me if they wish, or not ;-)

A sleeping bag, and preferably a tent too, if you wish to stay over.  Also the obvious things like toothbrush, deodorant...

Cash - for the pub lunch - as there are no cash machines within easy walking distance.  Note also that there are no shops handy, so if you are bringing a bottle you will need to get it on your way here.

The theme:

We're going for a music festival kind of theme. So casual dress is fine.  T-shirts with rock bands on would fit in.  Or hippy clothes maybe.  Whatever you feel like really, but feel free to have some fun with your attire if you feel so inclined.  Given the theme, it may be worth pointing out that I'm not letting you smoke pot in my garden ;-)

NB - A selection of people on my friends-list are going to the AFP camp in Buxton from Thursday - Sunday.  You will all be welcome to simply pick up your tent on Sunday afternoon and transport it to my garden to continue the socialising.

I think that's everything - comment here if you need to know something I have missed out.

Please comment on the post identical to ths IN MY PERSONAL JOURNAL to let me know if you are coming.  And please also mention any dietary restrictions I should be aware of.  I am well aware of the importance of avoiding cross-contamination, having had to cater for coeliacs and people with lactose intolerance in previous parties (and day to day life).

Anyone who has met me in real life is welcome to come to this party festival.  If you haven't met me in real life please email me or phone me first to ask if you can turn up.  I'll probably say yes, but would like to be spoken to first ;-)

Contact offline can be achieved on 07751 696 055.

Possible Liverpool Meet
The free Josh Kirby exhibition at the Walker Gallery (central Liverpool) begins next weekend.

Are any of the North Western afpers interested in getting together for a daytime meet one saturday to visit the gallery, possibly followed by food and drink at a suitable venue?

12 May...
This is rather short notice but is anyone up for an meet on the 12th May at the usual place - Pitcher and Piano, next door to the Bridgewater Hall in Manc?

The reason for suggesting this is that on 11th May 2006, I finally admitted to myself the truth and came out as TS. It is therefore fitting to celebrate my 1st "tranniversary", especially, as my real birthday passed by totally unmarked. I have to say, the last year has totally flown by.

I was going to organise a meet earlier, but I sort of got lost in dealing with work and personal issues.
